One Year of Breckinridge Legacy Foundation

October 1, 2026, marks one year of Breckinridge Legacy Foundation. We have already come so far, and the journey has just begun. Let’s take a look back at what this year has included and see what the future could look like.

Breckinridge Legacy Foundation had been a dream long before it became a plan and then a reality. Our founders wanted to give something back to the community they came from and that had given so much to them. They believed that through strategic investment in recreation and housing, a nonprofit foundation could help Union County build community, grow economically, and thrive. With a generous donation from the Gough family of Breckinridge Golf Course and 35 acres of adjacent farmland, this dream could now become a reality.

BLF was founded October 1, 2026 and the 2nd the first official meeting of the organization was held with its founders and representatives from the county and city. From there the paperwork had to be taken care of and December 15th we received our letter of recognition as a 501(c)3 organization, officially recognizing us as a nonprofit. Lastly on the legal side, Union County had first right of refusal to the golf course. So, during Fiscal Court March 12th, they approved BLF’s takeover of the property, and with that gave their stamp of approval on this project to better the community.

BLF wanted to give a proper introduction to the community and make sure that the people this foundation was made for knew, understood, and could give their feedback to the project and the plan. On April 17th, we had our grand opening where we talked about our plan for the Foundation and the Breckinridge area. We want to invest in the asset that is already here but also make this area more than just a golf course. We envision housing, walking trails, after school activities, and more; we want to make Breckinridge into a community hub that will drive economic growth and create community connections.

So where to start? From the minute the Foundation was announced, it was made clear that the golf course restaurant that closed due to Covid-19 in 2020 was a sorely missed gathering place for the community. After reworking the menu to include the old favorites, but also introduce some new goodies, we reopened the restaurant under the new name “Legacy Grill” on June 18th. The feedback has been incredible, and we are so excited to offer a new place in the county where people can gather and enjoy good food.

We officially took over the operations of the golf course July 1, and since then we have been lucky to host several school invitationals and matches. We are very proud to be the home course of the Union County High School Golf Team and John Paul II Catholic School Golf Team. We have also hosted well established tournaments like the Farmer’s Outing and the Deaconess Scramble, as well as some new additions like the Legacy Scramble at Breckinridge. This year the Legacy Scramble fundraised to remodel the ballroom so it can once again be used as an event center for the public. Those renovations will start shortly, and we plan to have the space open as soon as possible.

We would like to thank the community for the support we have received over the last year, and we look forward to continuing the progress in the years to come. Happy one year of Breckinridge Legacy Foundation!
